Last November, the New York State Thruway went to an all-electronic cashless tolling system. That meant the discontinuation of traffic-slowing toll booths on the highway and most of its interchanges.
The Thruway Authority has been removing the 52 toll plazas and 230 individual toll booths since then, and on Monday, removal of the final toll facility began. That toll plaza is at the Westfield/Exit 60 in Chautauqua County.
The $355 million Cashless Tolling Design-Build Project is continuing, with exit ramp realignment and road reconstruction at Thruway interchanges across the state. It is on schedule to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.
