The beginning of the NFL free agency period begins this week, followed by the draft in late April.
The Buffalo Bills are coming off of their first playoff berth in almost 20 years. Bills General Manager Brandon Beane has been active recently, trading starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns for a third-round pick.
“Really it’s a new franchise moving forward, and I think moving on from Tyrod, while it is surprising in the sense that you look back and say, ‘Well, this is the guy who broke the playoff drought,'” said Beyond the Playbook Correspondent Matt Sabuda.
Sabuda said he considered Taylor “a good quarterback, not a great quarterback.”
Along with the trading of Taylor, the Bills could look to unload another starter in Cordy Glenn.
“He’s a left tackle. Left tackle, arguably, behind quarterback is the second most valuable position in the NFL, certainly salary perspective-wise,” Sabuda explained. “So if you have just one team out there that believes this guy’s health problems are behind him, they’ve done their due diligence, the Bills could yield a higher draft pick.”
According to the Buffalo News, $90 million in salary cap space would be projected for 2019. One name the Bills could have on their free agency radar is a familiar one.
“I think they’re probably going to be in on some of that receiver crop and interestingly enough a familiar name will pop up. It will be interesting to see if the Bills have any inkling to pursue Sammy Watkins in a free agent signing,” Sabuda went on, “but I think as far as that goes, we’ll be looking at linebacker, wide receiver and now with running back solved, they’ll be looking at more depth.”
Sabuda said the pairing of Beane and Head Coach Sean McDermott has re-energized the fan base by continuing to set high standards.
