Some Buffalo Promise Neighborhood students learned about teamwork, a healthy diet and how to play a better game of basketball. University at Buffalo Athletics and M&T Bank collaborated to the present 'Basketball 101' program. WBFO'S Focus on Education Reporter Eileen Buckley says this new program is a day-long mentoring and academic enrichment program for students.
40- fourth graders from Highgate Heights Elementary and Westminster Community Charter School in Buffalo started their session in the main basketball court of Alumni Arena. UB Bulls head men's basketball coach Nate Oats welcomed the students and explained the important of academics for student athletes. He encouraged student to work hard in school and stay out of trouble.
Students then broke out into smaller groups. Some jumped right on the basketball court receiving tips. Students also learned about the importance of eating a healthy diet and nutrition.
The program also gives the elementary students some early exposure to a college campus and athletics. The program worked to reinforce the message that education is key.
