It's getting safer and better to live in the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood in the city's northeast corner. The latest crime reports were delivered to a public meeting Tuesday night in Westminster Community Charter.
The building is flanked by two crime hot spots. Promise Neighborhood Community Affairs Director Tanya Staples says that's a real problem in attracting new residents and keeping current ones. Staples says there's a growing alliance of police and community to make it a better area.
"They're working on very strategic kind of issues, of things that are happening in the community and then you have the burglaries that are also happening. But, we need residents to say something," Staples said.
"We need residents to say that they know this is what's going on and they know who the person is that's is involved in a particular kind of activity or residents that talk to other residents about their children and some of the behaviors that the children are exhibiting and things their kids are doing."
Police say they are actively using community police officers. With the coming of spring, foot patrol and officers on bikes will also be deployed. They also work on complaints to the city's 3-1-1 line on quality of life issues which can be controlled by police.
Officers say more community engagement will help both sides.
