Erie County Sheriff John Garcia has announced that a sheriff's deputy at the Holding Center downtown died while on duty Tuesday afternoon.

The sheriff said, about 4 p.m., Sgt. Arthur Basher, 39, suffered a medical event. Deputies and medical staff from the Division of Correctional Health administered CPR and other medical measures, but could not revive him.

Basher had been with the Sheriff's Office for nine and a half years and was promoted to sergeant in 2017.

“We are all stunned and shaken by his passing, and I have arranged for grief counselors and peer counseling to be available at the holding center,” Garcia said in a statement.

A shroud was placed on the memorial stone in front of 10 Delaware Ave. in Basher's memory, and the Sheriff's Office is extending its support to his family.
