A man was found guilty Friday of a murder that took place in one of Buffalo's most well-known restaurants.
Freddie Dizon, 32, was fatally shot while working in the kitchen of the Anchor Bar on Main Street on the evening of May 20, 2016. The man accused of the killing, Jorge Suarez, was convicted of second-degree murder after a nine-day trial in Erie County Court.
Jurors deliberated for just over three hours before reaching their decision. Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says with no DNA evidence and no clear eyewitnesses, getting a guilty verdict was far from a "slam dunk."
"We had a number of pieces of good circumstantial evidence in this case, but it takes good attorneys and good detectives, which we had in this case, to put the circumstantial evidence together in order to get a guilty verdict," Flynn told reporters, following the verdict.
Prosecutors say Suarez and Dizon had a history, including an accusation by Dizon that Suarez molested one of his children.
Suarez, 27, was also found guilty of second-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon. He will be sentenced on December 21 and faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The man accused of being his getaway driver, Gregory Ramos, faces separate charges. Ramos is currently in prison for domestic violence.
