There is a new name being read in roll calls at the Erie County Legislature. The legislature on Thursday named Cheektowaga Deputy Supervisor Timothy Meyers as the replacement for Legislator Patrick Burke.
The seat in the 7th Legislative District opened because Burke was elected to the New York State Assembly. Burke takes that position Jan. 1.
"Erie County is my life-long home, and it's where I've raised my children and where I hope they will raise theirs," Meyers said. "I will continue to fight for seniors, working families and to make sure that this generation and the next have the opportunities they need and deserve."
Under the county charter, a legislator has to be replaced by someone from the same political party and Democratic committee members chose Meyers. The vote was unanimous among all legislators.
It is likely that when the legislature seat is on the ballot this fall for a full two-year term, Meyers will face a primary.
Meyers is the son of the late Kenny Meyers, a longtime Cheektowaga supervisor, a Cheektowaga Council member since 2014 and a 39-year employee of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. Currently, he works as airfield supervisor for Niagara Falls International Airport.
