Demolition can now proceed of the nearly 125-year-old Great Northern grain elevator on Ganson Street.
The brick exterior of the building was heavily damaged during a Dec, 11th windstorm, and the city issued a demolition permit to the facility's owner, Archer Daniels Midland.
That was challenged in State Supreme Court by local preservationists, and a temporary restraining order was issued stopping the demolition process.
Judge Emilio Colaiacovo held fact-finding sessions with city officials who initially approved the demolition, and Wednesday afternoon canceled the restraining order. He determined that the damaged building was indeed a threat to public safety and, despite its historic significance, it should be torn down.
