Allen Street is once again available for vehicular traffic between Main and North Pearl Streets. Allen from Main to Delaware Avenue is being reconstructed at a cost of $5 million.

The work began last spring with the installation of new sewers and water lines.

City public works commissioner Michael Finn showcased the newly reconstructed block at a news conference Friday afternoon, saying the project is on schedule.

"There is still some landscaping we'll be working on," Finn said. "But we're able to reopen it to vehicle traffic.

Work is continuing on the second block of Allen between North Pearl and Franklin Streets and should be finished by the end of September or early October.

Reconstruction from Franklin to Delaware Avenue is scheduled for next year.

Finn said it's all about making Allen Street an attractive gateway to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

"The original goal of this project was to improve the Allen Street corridor to attract employees and students from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to shops and restaurants," Finn said. "We're looking forward to that being completed."
