The New York State Department of Transportation will be transporting "super loads" of wind turbine parts through southern Western New York beginning Tuesday.
The parts will be loaded on Lakeshore Road (Route 5) in Hamburg, then proceed along a designated route to the town of Arkwright in Chautauqua County. The transports will be escorted by New York State Police and occur 9 a.m. -3 p.m. weekdays.
One daily convoy is scheduled to occur each weekday from Apr. 17-Apr. 20. Beginning on Apr. 23, up to four convoys will occur each weekday through Jun. 12. Motorists should expect slow traffic around each transport and State Police will need to stop traffic temporarily where required along the route.
That route will follow Route 5 to Route 179 (Milestrip Road) to McKinley Parkway to Route 391 and Route 219 in Erie County. From Route 219, the transports will continue to Route 242, Route 394, I-86, Route 60, Route 20 and NY Route 39 in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.
The Arkwright Summit Wind Farm will connect to the grid in the Town of Pomfret and will have an installed capacity of 78.4 megawatts, enough to power about 33,000 average homes with clean energy each year.
