Buffalo's Central Terminal has been named to the 2018 World Monuments Watch, a diverse group of international cultural heritage sites facing "daunting threats."

The list features 25 sites spanning more than 30 countries and territories, dating from prehistory to the 20th century. Buffalo's Central Terminal is Number 22.

It shares a place on the list with a number of cultural heritage sites damaged by recent hurricanes, a once-vibrant marketplace burned amid fighting between the Syrian government and insurgents and the last-remaining rural passenger rail line in Chile, among others.

The long-defunct train station was closed in 1979 after a half-century of operation. It has ben undergoing renovations for years, but was recently passed over as the site of Buffalo's new Amtrak station.

Begun in 1997, the biennial World Monuments Watch aims to protect history by bringing these sites and their challenges to an "international stage," in hopes of identifying opportunities for local communities to collaborate with preservation agencies, governments and financial sponsors.
