Multiple plans for ice rinks emerging in Hamburg

Discussions are reportedly ongoing regarding two separate plans to develop ice rinks in the town of Hamburg. While one involving former Buffalo Sabres player Patrick Kaleta is drawing great speculation, the town board is not officially dealing with that project at this time.

According to Hamburg Supervisor Steven Walters, the town is involved with a group led by Sportstar Capital,  which is planning for a $25 million complex. That plan calls for two rinks in a facility that would be located near the intersection of Camp Road and Southwestern Boulevard.

"We want an ice facility in our town and that's what we're moving towards," Walters said.

"We've been working with Sportstar, again, since February and right now we haven't gotten anything directly from the Kaleta Group and we're going to continue to work until something changes."

It's possible a feasibility study could be presented at the town board  meeting on January 9. How an actual proposal from the Kaleta group would affect the Sportstar feasibility study isn't clear.

Both groups apparently want to be open in the fall of 2018, which Walters says is an aggressive schedule. Town officials expect to close the current town rink and re-purpose it for  other recreational possibilities.
