A Veterans Day trailblazer on several fronts

Congressman Brian Higgins

On this Veterans Day, those still living who served - and are currently serving - in the military are being honored across Western New York and the nation. To each person, either veteran or civilian, the ceremonies and the holiday take on their own meaning.

But for 94-year-old Indiana Hunt Martin of Niagara Falls, Veterans Day means blazing a trail where no African American woman had gone before in the sexist and segregated U.S. military of the 1940s. She served in the Women's Army Corps 6888th.
