Cheektowaga fire claims a life

Cheektowaga officials are investigating the cause of a house fire that took the life of one man.

Dozens of firefighters responded to a house fire at 93 Peoria Avenue Monday afternoon. Heavy flames and smoke were pushing through the roof, as Doyle Company firefighters reported a man on the second floor. Cheektowaga Police say it appears to be the son of the eldery man who was living there. The elderly man made it out unharmed.

At one time, Command ordered all crews out of the building and ordered defensive operations because of conditions. Police say several firefighters were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for medical issues related to dehydration and exposure to the heat and smoke.
