Repairs to WNY portion of Erie Canal won't affect local tourist attraction

Canal Corporation

A local tourist attraction and banquet facility is assuring the public that maintenance on a Western New York portion of the Erie Canal will not impede its operations.

Captain Michael Murphy, owner of the Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises, said the attraction and the Lockport Canalside Banquet Center will remain open while a 30-mile stretch of waterway between Albion in Orleans County and Middleport in Niagara County is drained for maintenance.

Officials with theCanal Corporation announced on Friday that the stretch will be drained in order to repair a culvert underneath the waterway. The work is set for June 27th and expected to last a period of several weeks. The culvert is more than a century old.

Murphy said his business is receiving inquiries from individuals and tour groups about the impact of the repairs. He said he wants to assure the public that all scheduled activities will continue as planned.
