Niagara Falls mayor Paul Dyster announced the first ten projects of the 2016 road paving season on Monday, and revealed three projects that will soon seek bids from contractors.
The announcement was made at the City Market on Pine Avenue, where two of the projects will take place. East Market and West Market, both from Pine to Elmwood, are among the first of 27 in-house projects the city hopes to complete this year.
"The City Council has approved the use of a little over one-point-one million dollars of casino revenues for in-house paving this year," Mayor Dyster said.
The remainder of the money for in-house paving projects will come from state-provided Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) funds.
In addition to East and West Market Streets, Dyster identified Robbins Drive, Madison Avenue (from College to Van Rensselaer), Morley (from Lewiston Road to Cliff), College Terrace (from College Avenue to Madison Avenue), Aaron Griffon Way (from Center Avenue to Beech Avenue), 13th Street (from Grove Avenue to Beech Avenue), Niagara Avenue (from 11th to 13th Streets and then from 18th Street to Hyde Park Boulevard) make up the first phase of this year's paving plans.
There will also be projects for which the city will seek bids by private contractors. Two that are scheduled to begin in mid to late summer are on Buffalo Avenue, from the 190 interchange to Cayuga Drive, and Portage Avenue from Walnut to Niagara.
A contractor paving project is also planned for Lockport Road, from Main to Seneca, beginning in the fall.
Dyster praised city public works crews for the completion of three repair projects, including the 500 block alley of 10th Street and Memorial Parkway, the south side of Pine Avenue from Hyde Park Boulevard to 39th Street and the Niagara Riverview Trail from LaSalle Waterfront to Old Stone Chimney. Dyster said completing the latter project was of utmost importance.
"Here in Niagara Falls we're playing host to three major bicycle events in the summer of 2016," he said. "The Tour de Cure, Ride for Roswell and then later in the summer the Empire State Ride."
