Road work set to begin across Erie County

Chris Caya WBFO News

Orange Work Zone signs should start going up soon on roads owned by Erie County. The Legislature's Economic Development Committee signed off on a $26.8 million highway improvement plan on Tuesday. Department of Public Works, Deputy Commissioner, Bill Geary says, if the weather cooperates, some projects should start immediately.

"Once the money's in place, with our bonded projects we can get them bid out right away. We have a lot of construction that companies that are looking to get on the bid and get the work done early. Which is to our benefit also. With oil prices being low, we want to hit that as soon as possible, and take advantage of that, and be able to do about 20 percent more work with the same dollars we spent last year," Geary said.

Committee Chair, Legislator Ed Rath, urged Geary to start work as soon as possible.

Rath also said that he will recommend that the full legislature approve the funding request at this Thursday's meeting.
