For years, thousands of participants have run the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure from Delaware Park through Elmwood Avenue and into downtown. Now, after 15 years, the race that promotes breast cancer awareness has announced it will move to Buffalo RiverWorks on the city's waterfront. Executive Director Liz Kahn says organizers like the RiverWorks facility for its indoor event space, an improvement on the muddy conditions that can sometimes occur at Delaware Park. Kahn says the move is being made because the race had grown just too big for its current location.
"The neighborhood has grown so much and it's so busy on a Saturday morning in June. It was becoming difficult to shut down streets for the residents and the businesses on Elmwood," said Kahn. "We just felt that it would be much safer."
No matter where it's held, Kahn says the 5K race is about recognizing those who have struggled in the fight against breast cancer.
"The Race for the Cure really acknowledges and honors survivors as well as remembering those who lost their battle to breast cancer. We have a parade of survivors before the race and after," Kahn added.
The race takes place Saturday, June 11, rain or shine. Riverworks will also host pre-race activities and a “weatherproof afterparty.”
