Zoos on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border are celebrating birthdays this month.

Sampson, the male giraffe at the Buffalo Zoo, turned one turned one on Saturday and celebrated with special activities and treats in the giraffe house. Children visiting the zoo got to join in with the festivities and sign a birthday banner for Sampson.

The Toronto Zoo is celebrating the birth of twin giant panda cubs on October 13th. The zoo released photos of the cubs' development on Saturday and says they are starting to look like giant pandas. The cubs are beginning to grow the iconic black and white fur and are doing well overall, but are still considered to be in a very critical stage of development that will last for several more weeks. The cubs' mother, Er Shun, is on loan from China.

Photos of the cubs and video from their birth is available on the Toronto Zoo's website.

Avery began his broadcasting career as a disc jockey for WRUB, the University at Buffalo’s student-run radio station.
