Lawmakers in New York State have taken a step toward making improper touching on public transportation a crime. The law will address inappropriate and unwarranted sexual contact on buses, trains, subways and other modes of public transportation. Crowded conditions set the stage for these incidents as the victim often cannot move away from the offender.

The crime will be listed as a misdemeanor and will carry a penalty of up to one year in prison.
