Bicycle riding has long been a source of pleasure and exercise for both men and women. But the realm of bicycling is often dominated by male riders, consider the Tour de France. An organized ride today will put the importance of woman and bicycling front and center. Tivona Renoni, the Community Outreach Coordinator for GoBike Buffalo, is promoting a local CycloFemme ride.

The event is international in scope, with 21 countries participating, and Renoni states that there is important history behind women and bicycling.

"In the turn of the 20th century , there was a real push for women getting on Bikes. Susan B. Anthony has this great quote, that's like: 'Let me tell you what I think about biking. I think it's done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.' So really, the bike in the turn of the 20th century, was really a tool of freedom for women."

Renoni assures that the ride is open to men and women, and it will begin at the GoBike community workshop on Colvin Avenue at 11 o'clock this morning.

A picnic is planned during the ride.
