Food banks across upstate New York are receiving a timely gift of thousands of cans of soup to feed the hungry.
Tops Friendly Markets, Campbell's Soup and the Buffalo Bills collaborated on a program to support four upstate food banks, including the one in Buffalo. Campbell's donated 20 cans of soup for each of the 960 tackles made by the Buffalo Bills during the 2014 season for a total of more than 19,000 cans.
The soup donation provides a big boost to food pantries and soup kitchens which tend to see a drop in food donations once the holiday season ends. Tops Chief Operating Officer Kevin Darrington tells WBFO News the need is always there.
'This is a good way to remind everyone that fighting hunger is a 12-month process, and that's what we're trying to do," Darrington said.
Cases of Campbell soup were stacked on pallets at the Food Bank of Western New York where Wednesday's donation announcement was made.
