The Guitar Drop on New Year's Eve at the Niagara Falls Hard Rock Cafe will go on as planned this year. The annual event draws thousands of spectators to the Falls every year for music, fireworks and the spectacle of a guitar dropping from the Giacomo Hotel to mark the dawning of the new year. The city's Common Council was not prepared to approve Mayor Dyster's request for $27,000 in support of the event, putting the festivities in jeopardy. A majority of the council subsequently agreed to provide $10,000 to fund the event out of the city's tourism fund.
Dyster defends the spending as an investment in the city.
Supportive council members contend that the event pays for itself.
