Buffalo Zoo President Donna Fernandes says the zoo’s female Polar bear cub, Luna, is well along the road to recovery. Luna suffered an ankle fracture from falling into a protective moat, and has been off-exhibit since September first.
Fernandes says zoo personnel had to be careful about the kinds of activities they used to keep the 440-pound two-year-old occupied, and protect her from worsening her injury...
“Our vet brought in some of his children’s video-tapes. We do different smells, different food treats. Things in fish. Fish in ice blocks. Things like that. One of our staff persons – the vet who raised her – brought in snow,” said Fernandes.
Luna has been reunited with the zoo’s male cub Kali. The two have been allowed to see each other in a holding area, but are not yet allowed to play until Luna is fully healed. Fernandes says they’re both in good spirits, and that Luna is excited to see her “B-F-F” again.
