Nearly four years after announcing plans, the Buffalo Zoo officially kicked-off construction Wednesday of its new Arctic Edge exhibit.

It will feature two large polar bear habitats. Zoo President/CEO Donna Fernandes says "it will be an amazing exhibit."

"It'll be all naturalistic, rather than the hard concrete of our former exhibit," Fernandes said. "There'll be natural grasses, two huge underwater pools and a cave area. In addition to polar bears, there'll be bald eagles, arctic wolves and Canadian lynx."

The Zoo's old bear pits were demolished to make way for the $14 million Arctic Edge. It's slated to open in the fall of 2015.
