Author Abraham Verghese offers insight into writing, medicine

Dr. Abraham Verghese has used his experience as a doctor and educator to build a successful writing career. During his recent visit to Buffalo for the Babel Series, he discussed his career with WBFO's Mike Desmond.

In Buffalo as the final speaker in this year's Babel Series presented by the Just Buffalo Literary Center, Verghese offered perspective on the world of medicine, a topic that he has expanded upon through works of fiction and non-fiction.

Born in Ethiopia, Verghese continued his medical studies in India before eventually settling in the United States. Much of his work, including the best-selling "Cutting for Stone," touches upon his experiences as a medical professional.

He remains a part of the faculty at Stanford University Medical School.
