City officials have plans for federal dollars

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Buffalo officials were in the Central Library Tuesday night explaining how millions of dollars in federal block grant money will be spent.

City Hall has a series of programs relying on federal dollars and they are all put together in the Annual Action Plan as an effort to deal with the city's persistent poverty problems.

That's even with the prospective benefits from the Buffalo Billion and the array of giant construction towers around town.

Strategic Planning Executive Director Brendan Mehaffy says there will be a lot of smaller construction equipment around. More than $8 million will be directed toward community centers; millions will be spent on parks, streets and sidewalks.

Mike Lee was in the library looking through the paperwork for money to help his food program at the CAO. Lee says the agency has an urban farm on Harvard, plus food stands on Harvard and on Fillmore.

"We're coming out of Downtown and putting it over where people don't have transportation and can walk to a farm stand," Lee explained.

The list of where the money is going runs on for pages, from rehab and paving to Clean and Seal Code Enforcement to supporting an array of community-based agencies across the city.
