The most significant threats of flooding from unseasonably warm temperatures and, at times, heavy rainfall yesterday have subsided. The National Weather Service has lifted its Flood Warnings and Flood Watches for Western New York. Approximately 30 residents in the Lexington Green neighborhood of West Seneca were temporarily evacuated from their homes as the Buffalo River exceeded its banks. Flood waters from Cazenovia, Silver and Walnut Creeks forced the closure of some area roadways and isolated evacuations.
Western New York had a warming spell with significant flooding in December and National Weather Service Meteorologist Dan Kelly tells WBFO that threats of flooding this winter could continue.
"At this point, it is difficult to tell. Winter in Western New York typically does have the freeze that the thaw cycles like this. We have been running a bit above normal as far as snowfall, but that could change. This is Western New York."
Cooler temperatures today are expected to keep area waterways from rising again.
Though the threat of flooding appears to have passed, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued until noon Sunday for southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties. Snow and freezing drizzle could accumulate creating very icy conditions.
