Gun enthusiasts who oppose New York's new gun law are planning to appeal a ruling in federal court this week. Judge William Skretny supported the main provisions of the NYS SAFE Act that bans the sales of a number of semi-automatic rifles and large capacity magazines. A notice of appeal has been filed with the Second Circuit US Court of Appeals by the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, pertaining to a lawsuit that is supported by sportsmen's groups, firearms businesses and gun owners.
Skretny did strike down the legislation's restriction of placing a maximum of seven bullets in 10-round magazines, finding the measure arbitrary.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has stated that he will support Skretny's rulings but plans to appeal the parts of the law that Skretny struck down.
