State Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes has introduced legislation that would legalize marijuana use in New York State. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act would make marijuana use subject to all statewide smoking regulations and would make the substance subject to a $50 per ounce tax. Peoples-Stokes defends the legislation, claiming that taxpayers would save millions of dollars a year.

The act would empower the State Liquor Authority with oversight, set the legal age for possession and consumption at 18, and allow legal possession of up to 2 ounces of marijuana.
