Allstate closing Amherst office, affecting 48 jobs

Allstate insurance company has announced plans to close its claims office in Amherst. The facility on Essjay Road employs 48 people and is expected to be shuttered by December 16. The company says most of the Amherst workers will be able to transfer to their Rochester office or apply for jobs elsewhere in the Allstate system.

The Amherst office is the smallest of nine claims offices across the state. Allstate says Buffalo-area customers will be served from Rochester and that "improved technology and efficiencies" made the Amherst office expendable.

Some employees who qualify and choose not to relocate will be offered severance benefits.
