A case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or EEE, has been identified in Chautauqua County. The victim is a horse in the town of Kiantone. The virus is transmitted to humans and animals through mosquito bites, though human cases are rare. Aerial spraying was performed by the county health department because the virus had been detected in the area. This is the first case identified in New York State this year.

The virus causes swelling of the brain and a variety of potentially dangerous side effects.
