Some relief is on the way for Niagara County homeowners and business operators whose property was damaged by recent flooding. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the funding Wednesday.
Cuomo says Niagara County will get $2 million in funding...part of the $16 million the state will provide to 5 counties hit hard by heavy rains. Cuomo says it’s another example of New Yorkers helping each other.
"When one person has a problem, everyone is there, one for the other. And that's what today is all about, and I want the state government to lead the way," Cuomo said.
Damage estimates in Lockport alone topped $7 million after storms flooded hundreds of basements last month.
Cuomo says residents need the help.
"It's a lot of money, but it's your neighbors saying we're here to help you," Cuomo said.
While the Federal Emergency Management Agency is assisting local governments with cleanup costs, FEMA denied funding to homeowners. Senator Chuck Schumer calls FEMA's decision “wrongheaded” and he's urging the state to appeal.
