Schumer joins gun control debate

New York’s senior Senator is taking issue with the NRA in the aftermath of the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings. Senator Charles Schumer appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday to offer his thoughts on the growing debate over the nation’s Second Amendment.

“Trying to prevent shootings in schools without talking about guns is like trying to prevent lung cancer without talking about cigarettes,” Schumer said.

Those thoughts countered the assertion of National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierre, who also appeared on “Meet the Press.”

LaPierre has drawn heavy criticism after offering his view on guns and school safety.

In disputing that stricter gun possession laws would curb violence, LaPierre argued that schools would be safer with armed and trained security personnel on site.
