Depew Police are continuing their investigation of a fatal Monday morning accident that left a 18-year-old girl dead. The teenager was killed as she waited for a  metro bus on Broadway at Kokomo Avenue.

Police say the unidentified driver of a Toyota SUV, a 35-year-old man from Lancaster, crossed the center median and struck Ashley Creighton of Depew around 7:05 a.m.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver then swerved back to the other side before smashing into Penora's Pizza, one block away at Broadway and Penora. His name is being withheld.

Police say the driver was returning home after working an overnight shift and may have nodded off.

"It appears the operator of the Toyota may have fallen asleep," said Depew Police Lieutenant Jerome Miller.

The accident is under investigation by Depew and Lancaster Police.

Miller says the driver allowed blood samples to be taken for toxicology tests. The car will be examined for any mechanical problems. No charges have been filed at this time.

A stretch of Broadway near the scene was closed for several hours Monday morning. The restaurant was heavily damaged and is closed for repair.
