SUNY chancellor addresses UB fracking research

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher says she is waiting to hear more from the University at Buffalo on a controversial study of hydrofracking.

Zimpher was responding to questions posed by Susan Arbetter on the statewide public radio show, "The Capitol Pressroom," heard locally on WBFO and AM 970.

UB's newly established Shale Resources and Society Institute released a report last month suggesting that violations in hydrofracking operations are declining. But critics accused the Institute of using researchers with industry ties.  Zimpher said she realizes this is a hotly contested issue.

"I think the University at Buffalo has a very high standard for the review of their research," Zimpher said.  " I'm confident they will step up and respond to implications of how the study was done."

Saturday, about 100 people turned out at Buffalo State for a day-long forum on hydrofracking.  Most of the speakers spoke out against the practice because of the potential environmental harm.  But a spokeswoman for the gas industry accused the forum organizers of skewing the facts.
