The US Army Corps of Engineers is examining the possible radioactive contamination of well water in Lockport.
Surveys have been mailed to property owners within a mile of the former Guterl Steel plant on Ohio Street. Ground water near the Erie Canal has been found to be contaminated, but seepage into nearby wells is undetermined.
The plant was used to process uranium and thorium in the 40's and 50's, rendering portions of the plant off-limits still.
