FDA warns about OTC drugs at Dollar Tree, Family Dollar stores

Dollar Tree

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued another warning letter to Dollar Tree stores about its over-the-counter drugs.

The FDA said drugs produced by foreign manufacturers for Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores have been "found to have serious violations of federal law. That includes the stores' Assured Brand drugs, as well as others.

"Dollar Tree has the ultimate responsibility to ensure it doesn't sell potentially unsafe drugs," said Donald Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

He noted additional warning letters in 2016-2018, as well. Ashley said this shows "a pattern of serious violations of the law, such as not testing raw materials or finished drugs for pathogens and quality."

The FDA encourages health care professionals and consumers to report any adverse events to its MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
