Making your way around the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will get easier as the result of a $15 million state grant that will make the growing corridor more pedestrian-friendly.A proposed series of aboveground walkways between the John R. Oishei Children's Hospital and other buildings on the downtown medical campus has been unanimously approved by directors of the Empire State Development Corp.
Medical Campus Communications Manager Susan Kirkpatrick says the walkways will be especially useful in cold-weather months.
“We all know what Buffalo winters are like, so just to be able to connect those institutions easily and without having to worry about going outside in inclement weather, it just makes it easier for more collaboration between those institutions,” she said. “We will eventually be able to link every medical institution on campus which provides easier access for the public, for patients, and for physicians and staff.”
The walkways will consist of bridges and corridors. The project is expected to be completed within the next two years, in time for the opening of the John R. Oishei Children's Hospital.
