The New York State United Teachers union is hosting its annual Representative Assembly in Buffalo on Friday and Saturday.NYSUT President Karen Magee is in town for the event, but it is not the only public appearance she has made. Magee was one of many outspoken leaders at Friday’s International Workers Day rally in downtown's Niagara Square.

Magee highlighted international demonstrations by educators in Italy and Europe, as well as the privatization of Mexican public schools. She said the fight is becoming fearsome.

“Last fall, 43 student teachers protesting the attack on Mexican public schools were arrested and then found murdered," said Magee. "So our fight, sisters and brothers, our fight is real. It’s real and it’s frightening.”

Magee drew cheers from the crowd of hundreds, as she said NYSUT is proud to be holding its convention in Buffalo, where labor has deep roots.
