Majority members of the Buffalo School Board are reportedly moving to fill the position of superintendent with Emerson School of Hospitality Principal James Weimer Jr.
Weimer has withdrawn his name from consideration for the job of deputy superintendent, leading interim Superintendent Donald Ogilvie to call off the search for a deputy superintendent.
It was believed the deputy would ultimately take the top post, but it now appears Weimer, the reported favorite, would be appointed directly to the superintendent position.
Meanwhile, minority members of the school board are calling for a special session Monday to discuss the search for a Superintendent.
Board member Barbara Seals Nevergold issued the following statement:
"The Buffalo Board of Education’s search for a Deputy Superintendent collapsed today with the withdrawal of Emerson High School Principal James Weimer, Jr. for consideration for the position. Weimer was the acknowledged choice of the Board’s majority, who planned to elevate the Deputy Superintendent to the position of Superintendent upon the departure of current Interim Superintendent Donald Ogilvie.
Ogilvie’s departure on July 1st creates an urgent need for Board action to initiate a search for a Superintendent. The Board has the responsibility to work collaboratively to structure and initiate this process."
The Board’s minority has called for a special board meeting on Monday, April 27th, (this date was originally scheduled for interviews with the Deputy Superintendent candidates) to begin this critical work.
