High-demand charter school begins expansion project

Chris Caya/WBFO News

A Buffalo elementary school with a lengthy waiting list will soon be able to accept more students. Elmwood Village Charter School broke ground Wednesday on an expansion project that will add classrooms, resource rooms and space for the arts. The project will allow enrollment to increase by 125 students in grades K-8.

EVCS Director John Sheffield says the school's current waiting list has about 600 names.

"We get one shot at educating children and parents recognize that. Parents recognize the urgency to find high-quality schools for their children and that's why more and more parents across the City of Buffalo are becoming informed and looking for high-performing schools for their children," Sheffield says.

Sheffield says three new classrooms will be ready by the fall and the rest of the project will be completed in about a year.

The expansion will grow Elmwood Village Charter School from its current 325 students to 450.
