The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about a phone scam making the rounds.
Sheriff Tim Whitcomb said residents have been receiving calls, supposedly from the Social Security Administration, requesting individuals to press number 1 for further communications asking for personal information. This only increases a person's involvement in the scam.
Whitcomb is discouraging residents from ever giving out their personal information over the phone. He said the Social Security Administration confirms they do not call individuals; everything is done through their office by mail.
If such a call is received, he encourages residents to call the police.
