ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a robbery at an upstate New York college that's being called racially motivated.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says $250 was taken from a backpack in a dorm suite sometime early Thursday at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester. Investigators say shaving cream was used to write several messages that targeted African-Americans.
The suite is shared by members of the men's basketball team. Because the common area of the suite cannot be secured, deputies say the robbery is being investigated as criminal mischief and larceny.
About 1,000 Roberts Wesleyan College administrators, faculty and students gathered Friday on campus to support the victims. School officials say they're "outraged and saddened" by the incident.
