Forty doctors at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center have been honored in an annual directory that recognizes physicians chosen by their peers.
Castle Connolly recently released its America's Top Doctors ranking, choosing from more than 100,000 nominations.
While many publications and websites exist that rate members of the medical community, Roswell Park's chief medical officer, Dr. Boris Kuvshinoff, says the Castle Connolly ranking is important because it's peer-driven.
"These are nominated by other physicians," Dr. Kuvshinoff said. "Then they have a team of physicians that go over these nominations and go through a number of vetting processes, checking whether you have your boards or not. Anything that's available to them in the public domain, they'll go through those."
Dr. Kuvshinoff, who is included among the Roswell Park doctors in the list, says it recognizes the staff's work toward the common goal of healing patients. It also helps the institution in its effort to raise its status among the nation's cancer research centers.
"We see ourselves clearly with a role and an obligation to treat our local community," Dr. Kuvshinoff said. "But we also see ourselves as someone that can provide cutting-edge therapies for anybody in the rest of the country."
Roswell Park's work has also gone international. It's currently working with a Cuban partner to test the lung cancer vaccine CIMAvax.
