With a lot of financial help from the state and State Power Authority treasury, Tulip Molded Plastics in Niagara Falls is apparently going to get a new plant. The move is expected to save more than 80 jobs.
The new Tulip plant would be on the brownfield site of the old Prest-o-Lite battery plant on Highland Avenue. The announcement of saving Tulip was personal for State Assemblyman John Ceretto.
"I worked there for over 20 years. At a time when in my life, I went to school and got a master's degree and I started off in teaching," Ceretto said.
"I was there and I was out, in and out and I wanted to have a family. That place provided the resources so that I could have my four children today. They grew up with Dad working as a laborer."
Mayor Paul Dyster says he agreed since his grandfather worked in the Prest-o-Lite plant and he immigrated from Canada for that job.
Tulip President and CEO Craig Kellogg says there are a few more issues but it looks like the $10 million project will go ahead and continue Tulip's 114 years in Niagara Falls, now making plastic battery cases.
