Supermarkets ready for Super Bowl rush

File photo

Local grocery stores are expecting heavy traffic through Sunday as shoppers stock up for their Super Bowl parties.

Tops Friendly Markets Chief Operating Officer Kevin Darrington says this is one of the busiest times of the year for the Williamsville-based supermarket chain.

"We treat this like a holiday," said Darrington. "When you think Super Bowl, people think of two things: eating and commercials."

Darrington says the Super Bowl is one of the biggest days in the grocery business, right up there with Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. He says the most popular items tend to be chips and dips, carbonated drinks and, of course, beer.

Darrington says extra staff will be on hand to accommodate the rush of last-minute shoppers.
