JPMorgan Chase closing 400-person Albion office

JPMorgan Chase & Co. says it plans to close its mortgage call center in Albion, putting about 400 people out of work.

The company said Thursday that closure of the Orleans County office is part of nationwide reductions in Chase Bank's mortgage services staffing. JPMorgan Chase announced in February that it would cut 17,000 jobs nationwide this year.

The call center will close in early September. For years it was the largest employer in the rural village. Some employees will be transferred to other Chase operations in the Rochester area.

JPMorgan Chase took over the call center when it acquired bankrupt Washington Mutual in 2008. At its peak, the office employed more than 1,000 people
