Polish-Slovak Easter egg tradition

For more than 30-years a family has been creating a special Easter tradition at the Broadway Market. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley learned how real eggs are made into a 'work of art'.

"Our eggs are actually all real Easter eggs," said Jennifer Glenn.

Glenn is with Our Traditions, a family business.  For over three decades Glenn and family members carefully remove the inside of an egg, then create colorful designs.

“The Easter Egg is a sign of rebirth and the resurrection, so it is a sign of spring,” Glenn explained.  "And they are hand painted?" Buckley asked. “They're all hand done. They're very delicate and fragile. The eggs are decorated first -- with beeswax and dye and when you're all down with that, you blow the egg out and have a beautiful creation,” Glenn responded.

“It takes a lot of time that goes into it and it really is a unique art form,” remarked Glenn.

Glenn said her family is Polish and Slovak and that means brightly colored eggs.

“So we do more of this bright color design here – a Ukraine egg s more fine line and very intricate. It has a lot of symbols, whether it’s a rooster or wheat or moons and stars – all different symbols have different meanings.  You know some people come in and they really want a Polish egg and some people come in and really want more of a Ukrainian style,” Glenn said.

Glenn tells WBFO News they have repeated customers year after year who collect the eggs.

“And we have a lot of followers that come year after year and they specifically pick out a new egg every year and a lot of people, we’ve become friends with over the years,” Glenn noted.

Our Traditions is only set up two weeks before Easter at the Broadway Market.
