It is one of the most iconic traditions in Buffalo – the annual trip to the Broadway Market to buy Easter goods. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley was at the Market Thursday as the city of Buffalo kicked-off the Easter Season.
Polish bakery smells and fest Easter colors fill the Broadway Market. The traditional market stands are based on markets in Poland. The Broadway Market opened in 1888.
Fillmore District Common Council Member David Franczyk said while the world rapidly changes, the Market is still a place providing the same traditions for the last 130-years.
“We are going to outlast any forms of commerce that you ever did see and I’m very heartened by it, and the city believes in this place and it will continue and it will get better,” remarked Franczyk as he spoke to the crowd gathered.
The Market remains a tradition for many Western New Yorkers who buy up their Easter delights.
Mayor Brown said the city continues investing in the Market, trying to make it a year-round destination, something it has struggled with for years. But the Mayor points out investment by the city continues to grow the depth of the Market.
“We have a commercial kitchen that will be coming to the Broadway Market. That will be a half-a-million dollar investment. We have a police substation coming to the Broadway Market that will also be a half-a-million dollar investment,” Mayor Brown declared.
The Mayor said investing in the Market will also contribute to the transformation of the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.
After the traditional speeches were held and a prayer was delivered from St. Stanislaus Pastor Father Mariuz, a ribbon was cut to officially jump starting the Easter shopping season.
